Starting a Natural Hair YouTube Channel

I recently started a natural hair YouTube channel. It’s a fun process but I know it will take time to grow my channel. I started my channel two and a half weeks ago and I have posted 5 videos so far and combined they have a total of  60 views.  It is a process growing a YouTube channel but with consistency and a focus on my audience, I know my channel will grow.

How to Start a Natural Hair YouTube Channel

Starting is easy and you can use what you already have. Signing up for a YouTube channel is free.  If you don’t have a video camera, you can use your phone to record video. No need to buy expensive equipment.

I recommend purchasing a tripod. If you have a shelf somewhere in your house with good lighting where you can rest your cell phone, you may be able to skip the tripod.

Focus on Hair Care

It can be tempting to start one channel for everything you like to do.  We all have a lot of interest like  fitness,  makeup, finance, travelling and cooking but if you make one channel for all of those topics it is hard  for YouTube to suggest your videos to the right audience.

Not another Twist Out Video: Find Your Unique Natural Hair Voice

It is hard to grow a Natural Hair YouTube channel if you are making the same type of YouTube videos everyone else is making.

Did you recently big chop? If so you can start your channel with videos about styling and maintaining a twa. Your channel could also document your growth journey if you decide to grow your hair out.

Are you in the process of becoming natural? This is a great time to start a natural hair YouTube channel. Lots of popular YouTube Channels feature naturals who have been natural for a while and already have long beautiful hair. You can start a Natural Hair YouTube channel about transitioning from relaxed to Natural.  There aren’t nearly as many videos or YouTube Channels about transitioning to natural, it could be a good way to start your video

Do you do a lot of crochet styles? Do you own a Natural Hair Salon? Perhaps  you have one or more daughters and can feature videos about styling their hair? Remember not all  videos need to be style tutorials. You can talk about natural hair topics or share your natural hair care journey.

Consistency is More Important than Perfection

I have unlimited photo and video storage so I record everything.  I record styles that I’ve mastered and styles that I am trying for the first time. I rarely have enough time to put on makeup AND record a hair video, so I usually skip the makeup.

Stay audience focused and upload at least once a week. If your audience is looking to learn about natural hair care, you can provide value without perfect makeup.

Brainstorm Ideas for Videos

Knowing what type of videos you want to post to YouTube will help keep you on track.
