Easy Simple Flat Twist Tutorial with Images and Video

I love adding flat twist to the front of a twist out or a high puff to give it a little flair. Large twist all over can serve as a great protective style. Learning how to flat twist opened up more options to style my natural hair and ultimately helped me stay the course to becoming natural.

Recommended Tools & Products

For this style you need a few products that are available at your local beauty supply store, Target or Walmart. I’ve included links to where to find them online.

  • Wide Tooth Comb for Detangling
  • Pomade or other styling product for hold and Polish. I used Curls Passion Fruit Control Paste for this style. I like this product because it gives a medium hold. I can wear this style for a few days and remove the twist and restyle without a lot of buildup. Check the current price on Amazon here.
  • Ponytail Holders or Clips to keep extra hair out of the way. I like the seamless Hair Elastic I was able to get a large package of 50 on amazon. Check the current price on amazon here.

Step 1: Section and Detangle your Hair Prior to Starting your Flat Twisting

Detangling you hair prior to flat twisting your hair facilitates the twisting process. To flat twist you will need to grab sections of your hair as you move along. Detangling your hair allows your fingers to slip through your hair easily and helps to keep the twist neat.

Step 2: Apply a styling product to the Base prior to starting a Flat Twist

Applying a styling product to the base gives the final style a more polished look. It also helps to gather all the hair where you need it. This ensures that none of the hair gets left out. Apply your gel, pomade, or moisturizer.

Step 3: Separate Hair into two sections to start your Flat Twist

For this style I am adding a flat twist along my hair line. I have one piece of hair that is closer to the back of my head and another piece of hair that is closer to the front of my head.

Step 4: Cross the back Section over the front Section of the Flat Twist

Cross the back section of Hair over the Front

For this style I am twisting toward the front of my head. The back section will cross over the front section of the hair.

Step 5: Grab Hair and add it to the back section of the Flat Twist

Add Hair from the Base to the back strand of the Twist

I always add hair to a section when it is at the back. I also always try to add about the same amount of hair each time. One of the keys to achieving a clean twist is to keep the sections separated. When I add hair to a section, I only add it from the base. I never move hair between sections, this helps to create a nice neat twist.

Step 6: While holding the Front Section Cross the Back Section over the front

Hold the Front Section of the Twist while crossing the Back Section over

For this style I decided to twist toward the front of my head. Every time I twist, I am twisting the back strand over the front strand of hair.

A flat twist can be achieved by twisting the front section over the back section, but it will result in a different look.

Step 7 Two Strand Twist to the End of Hair

Keep adding hair to the back section and crossing it over the front. Repeat until you reach the end of the section. Once you reach the end of the section and there is no more hair at the base, simply two strand twist until the end.
