Does Ecoslay Jello Shot Live up to the hype?

I need a strong hold gel to make it past day 2 in a wash and go. Until now that meant using gels with lots of plastics like vp copolymer, acrylates copolymer, or PVP. I’ve seen reviews of Ecoslay Jello Shot and all say it is a strong hold bursting with botanicals. I held out on buying this gel for years because it needed to be refrigerated. Last week I finally took the plunge ordered Ecoslay Jello Shot from Amazon, and I was surprised by initial results.

Is refrigeration required for Ecoslay Jello Slot

Almost every review I’ve seen of Ecoslay Jello Shot mentions that it “must be stored in the refrigerator”. The thought of remembering to take a gel out of the fridge before washday or having to run to the kitchen straight out of the shower made this gel a hard pass for me. Recently Black Girl Curls sent out a news letter with some amazing results using Ecoslay Jello Shot as a topper gel. I wanted to give it a try.

I reached out to Ecoslay, and discovered that refrigeration is recommended not required for Ecoslay Jello Shot. Refrigeration extends the shelf life of Jello Shot but it lasts up to 3 months without refrigeration. I opted to get the 8oz package of Jello Shot from amazon. I know I can definitely go through 8oz of gel in 3 months even with other products on rotation. The best value would be the subscribe and save option directly from the Ecoslay website.

First Impression of Ecoslay Jello Shot

I scanned the ingredients, I love love love how there is minimal carbomer in the product. The Botanicals are the star of the show for this gel, the carbomer seems like it is only added for a little texture. The gel is very lightly and pleasantly fragranced. And the gel is Crystal Clear and not terribly sticky. I was impressed and ready to start using it.

Using Ecoslay Jello Shot as a Topper Gel

I always start my wash and go with a humectant base, normally Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic. Then I pick one or two more products (gel, foam, or serum) for my desired finish. This set was inpired by a Black Girl Curls newsletter, so I went with Curly Magic as my base gel, Innersense I Create Hold as my first Topper and Ecoslay Jello Shot as my second topper.

The next time I use Jello Shot, I want to try it with Curly Magic as my base gel and Jello Shot as my topper gel and leave out the I Create Hold.

Results using Ecoslay Jello Shot

So, I’m writing this on day 2. This is definitely a strong hold gel, and I love that. I expected the Jello Shot to be heavy, but once I rubbed it in my hands and applied it, it was really light weight. Despite being lightweight it did elongate and clump my girls. There is a definite gel cast but it is not crunchy.

I let my hair air dry for a few hours and then diffused when I got a chance. As a result I had lots of frizz. My hair still looks great because I got tons of definition from this combo of gels. My results would have been better if I dried my hair right away. Even if it was just a few minutes to get the gel cast going. Have you tried Ecoslay Jello Shot?
