Curling Custards Everything You Need to Know

Curling Custards were thick sticky, never dried and left my hair with a weird white residue. In the beginning of my natural hair journey I tried curl custards and hated them. Once I started doing wash and go’s I started to fall in love with custards. When used properly they are a great product. I’ve been loving curling custards, they add weight and help to define my tight curls and coils.

What Do Curl Custards Do

Curl Custards are the perfect product for defining natural coils and curls. Their light to medium-hold formula contains humectants such as aloe, glycerin and marshmallow root that create a thick and sticky texture – ideal for elongating those beautiful spirals! When wanting long-lasting results it can be used in tandem with another gel.

Curls and coils are most defined when wet. Humectants pull water to the hair, so those coils and curls stay defined throughout the styling process.

How to Use Curl Custards

Curling custards are an essential styling product for those looking to achieve smooth, glossy locks. But when and how is the key – use them on freshly cleansed or damp hair as this will help ensure even distribution of the curling custard without leaving behind any unwanted residue. On dry hair that has already been exposed to other stylers your curls may be left feeling flakey, sticky and limp- not a good look!

Curling Custards are stylers, so they are applied on clean wet or damp hair. You dry them with a diffuser or hooded dryer. They stay on your hair until the next wash day.

If you are using curl custards to style a quick curly ponytail, you can apply a small amount to wet or damp hair and style as normal. If you are setting a wash-and-go you should work in sections to make sure the thick custard gets on all of the locks. Raking and smoothing coils in small sections helps to ensure the custard gets distributed evenly.

Is Curly Custard the Same as Gel?

Is curling custard the same thing as gel? A curl custard is similar to gel since it is a styler with hold. A curl custard is different from a gel because it contains more moisturizing ingredients. Curl gels normally typically contain water soluble polymers to lock in moisture

What is the Best Curling Custard for Natural Hair

“Best” Custard Depends on the results you want. I need custards for control, so I like weighty custards that don’t take forever to dry. I’ve been experimenting and here are some of my favorite custards.
